Mulch and Weeds in Utah: What Actually Keeps Weeds Down

Hand trowel standing in a raised garden bed of dark soil

Mulch helps with weeds, but it does not end them. A good layer blocks light from many weed seeds and makes the ones that sprout easier to pull. It does not stop perennial weeds that push up from deep roots, and it does not stop seed that lands on top of the mulch. Here is what mulch does well in Utah beds and where it falls short.

How much mulch to use

A layer about two to three inches deep is the usual recommendation. Thinner than that and light still reaches the soil. Thicker than that can hold too much moisture against stems and trunks. Keep mulch a few inches away from the base of plants and trees, rather than piled against them.

What mulch stops

  • Seeds in the soil. Many annual weed seeds need light to sprout, and a thick layer of mulch shades them out.
  • Small seedlings. Weeds that do sprout in mulch have shallow roots and pull out easily.
  • Moisture loss. Mulch keeps soil cooler and damper in Utah’s hot summers, which also helps your plants outcompete weeds.

What mulch does not stop

  • Perennials with deep roots. Bindweed, Canada thistle and quackgrass grow up from below and push through mulch.
  • Seed that lands on top. Wind and birds drop seed into the mulch itself, and weeds sprout in the top layer without ever touching soil.
  • Weeds already growing. Mulching over weeds buries them for a while and then they come through.

Weed first, then mulch

The order matters. Pull what is growing before you mulch, including roots, then spread the mulch. Mulching over a bed full of weeds mostly wastes the mulch.

Landscape fabric is not a fix

Fabric under mulch or rock keeps some weeds down for a while, but it does not stop weeds that root in the layer of mulch or debris on top, and roots grow through it. See our guide to rock bed weeds for what happens over time.

Refresh it each year

Mulch breaks down. Top it up once a year, usually in spring, so you stay at two to three inches. Fresh mulch also makes new weeds easier to spot.

Mulch plus weekly pulling

The beds that look best combine both: mulch to slow weeds down, and regular hand pulling to catch what gets through. Weekly weed pulling from Utah Weed Pullers does the second part: see flower bed weeding and pricing.
