Flower Bed Maintenance in Utah: A Month-by-Month Checklist

Flower bed maintenance in Utah comes down to a short list of recurring jobs, and weeding is the one that decides how the bed looks. This month-by-month checklist covers what to do and when, from the first warm weeks in March to the last cleanup in November.
March–April: wake the beds up
- Cut back last year’s dead growth once the hard freezes are over.
- Pull the first weeds: dandelions, mallow and chickweed are up before most perennials.
- Refresh mulch where it has thinned. Two to three inches suppresses weeds without smothering plants.
May–June: stay ahead of the flush
- Weed every week. Late spring is when seedlings in fresh mulch and bindweed shoots take off.
- Edge the bed where it meets lawn so grass doesn’t creep in.
- Check irrigation: wet leaves and constant moisture help weeds as much as flowers.
July–August: pull before it seeds
- Goatheads, purslane and kochia peak in the heat. Pull them before burrs and seed heads form.
- Deadhead spent flowers and keep mulch topped up where soil is showing.
September–November: close out the season
- A thorough fall weeding makes next spring much easier.
- Bag weeds that have set seed instead of composting them.
- Cut back perennials, then mulch for winter.
Which job matters most?
If you only have time for one recurring task, make it weeding. Mulch and edging help, but a bed with weeds growing through it looks neglected no matter how fresh the mulch is. Hand weeding is also the only method precise enough for a mixed bed; see hand pulling vs. spraying.
Want the weeding handled?
Utah Weed Pullers does the weeding part of flower bed maintenance for you: a weeder visits once a week and pulls weeds by hand, working around your plants. See flower bed weeding or our prices.
